May 12, 2011 Cohort in Robbery, Two-State Chase Pleads Guilty WORCESTER — A woman involved in a Fitchburg robbery and two-state, fatal police chase was sentenced to prison today in Worcester Superior Court after pleading guilty to unarmed robbery, Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. announced. Judge James R. Lemire sentenced Jannine O’Connor, 40, of Billerica to 1 ½ to 2 years in the Massachusetts Corrections Institute in Framingham. Assistant District Attorney Thomas E. Landry had recommended a prison term of 3 years to 3 years and a day, while defense attorney Stuart Hurowitz recommended a term of probation. On Oct. 13, 2010, Ms. O’Connor and Leslie M. Moore, 40, of Gardner scoped out Ray’s Variety Store in Fitchburg for a possible robbery. At about 8 a.m. that day, Ms. O’Connor entered the store and demanded money. In fear for her safety, the store clerk handed over some cash. Ms. O’Connor fled the store with the money and got into a car operated by Ms. Moore. The car was pursued by local and state police to the New Hampshire border. While in New Hampshire the women abandoned their car and stole another car. They headed back to Massachusetts. Eventually they ended up back in Fitchburg and were again pursued by local police. Ms. Moore was shot and killed by Fitchburg Police after using her vehicle as a weapon in her attempt to escape. Ms. O’Connor was arrested at the scene and gave police a statement describing the events of the day. |
